Winter Solstice Sunset on Pensacola Beach

In photos I've seen of sunsets on Pensacola Beach, I've noticed that many of them show the sun setting over the water. And always I've asked myself, "When? When were those photos taken?" Because whenever I've seen sunsets from the beach here, the sun was always setting over land.

Now I know the sun moves in the sky not only from east to west, but also south and north. I go out to the beach regularly spring, summer and early fall. I don't normally go out to the beach in the winter. But I know that the furthest to the south that the sun sets is on the winter solstice. (It sets furthest to the north on the summer solstice.)

So being reasonably confident that the world wasn't going to end (see
The Next Doomsday - This Friday, The Mayan Apocalypse Prophecy), I decided to go out to Pensacola Beach for the winter solstice and see if the sun would set over the water..............
